The school loads its textbooks, teacher handouts, lab manuals and set readings. Students ask in their own words and get an answer that cites the book and the page — and opens the passage right there, inside the tool.

Nothing else is in the room: no open web, no material the school has not approved, no answer without its sources. The answer is bounded by the corpus the teachers chose, and the student can always go and check it.

A general-purpose chatbot answers from the open web, in a register the school did not choose, from an edition of the subject the school did not adopt. When it does cite something, the reference often looks plausible and cannot be opened — and a student who cannot open a source cannot learn to check one.

The school is left with two bad options: forbid a tool the students use anyway, or accept answers it cannot see, cannot bound and cannot correct. Monolite is the third: the same ease of asking, over a corpus the teachers put together themselves.

The scan lists what it found; each item is approved or refused — one at a time or in bulk, as the school set it up at installation — and gets its subject and year. Nothing is readable by students before that.

The protected environment

This is the part a school is buying. It is not a promise about behaviour: each line below is a property of how the system is built. Protected here means bounded: the perimeter governs which materials can enter an answer; it does not replace a teacher’s supervision.

The model is only ever handed passages from the approved corpus. There is no browsing, no search engine, no second archive behind the first: nothing else can reach it.

A question the corpus does not cover returns “no sources”, not an invented paragraph. That is the moment a teacher hears about a gap in the material.

Book and page, and for the main formats the passage itself one tap away. The habit the tool teaches is checking, which is the habit a chatbot without sources quietly removes.

The system keeps an audit trail — requests made, sources opened, when and by whom — because an archive of this kind has to be auditable. It assigns no score, builds no learning profile of a pupil and takes no decision about anyone’s path. Who may read that trail, and how long it is kept, is written into the offer before anything is switched on.

Material is labelled by year and subject, and a student reaches only what their year and subject allow. Teacher-only material stays teacher-only. One thing has to be said in the same breath: a few accounts carry the permission to see the whole archive, their number can be queried on your own installation, and at least one of them belongs to someone outside the school — our technician. The counterpart is that every access by those accounts is recorded, reads included, and you can see it.

Every document carries a two-part label: a level, which is ordered, and zero or more compartments, which are not. Names and number are set at installation, using the vocabulary the school already uses.

A Year 3 student cleared for Teaching material reaches the adopted textbooks and their teachers’ handouts — and not the test bank, not the marking schemes, not a colleague’s file. The filter acts before a source exists: an out-of-reach document does not appear, is not summarised, and produces no “I can’t show you that”, which would already tell the class it is there.
Uno studente di terza abilitato a Materiale didattico raggiunge i libri adottati e le dispense dei suoi docenti — e non le verifiche, non le griglie di valutazione, non il fascicolo di un collega. Grades come from deterministic rules on folders and source paths — this folder is teachers-only, this path carries this subject — and the language model may only narrow access, never widen it. What a class can reach does not depend on the behaviour of a statistical system.

This is why the access rules hold: a student who is not cleared for a document does not get a model that refuses to talk about it — the model is never handed it in the first place. And it is why the solution scales by adding a Brain rather than by changing product: the Orchestrator, with the archive and the rules, stays one.

Outside the local configuration no confidentiality grade holds content back: the security model governs who reads inside the product, not where the quoted text is processed. Said here because for a school it is a confidentiality decision before it is a cost one.

The split is deliberate: the Orchestrator is what the school owns and keeps, while the Brain is the part that depends on how many classes use it and where you want it to run.
